The 2024 Elections: A Pivotal Moment for Climate Action and Sustainability

by Jennifer Irwin

The 2024 elections are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of climate action and sustainability globally. The choices voters make will significantly influence environmental policies, international climate agreements, and efforts to combat climate change. This article highlights the significant elections in the United States, Russia, European Union, India, and the United Kingdom to provide a comprehensive analysis of how the 2024 elections will impact climate action and sustainability.

Climate Change and Democratic Resilience
Climate change has become a central issue in political discourse, influencing voter decisions and shaping party platforms. The 2024 elections will test democracies’ ability to address the climate crisis. Increasing public awareness of climate issues is pushing politicians to prioritize environmental policies, particularly in countries like the United States and European Union members, where climate change is a key voter concern (Hulme, 2023).

Key Elections to Monitor
United States Presidential Election: The U.S. is responsible for 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions; hence the U.S. presidential election will be a major determinant of global climate policy (IEA, 2023). The next administration will influence domestic environmental regulations and international climate negotiations. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act marked significant progress in reducing carbon emissions, but its future hinges on the upcoming elections (Smith, 2022).
European Parliament Elections: These elections will shape the EU’s climate agenda, particularly the European Green Deal, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 (European Commission, 2021). Electing pro-environment candidates can ensure the continuation and strengthening of these initiatives (Doe, 2023).
Indian General Election: India, one of the world’s largest democracies and a significant emitter of greenhouse gases, will also hold elections in 2024. The outcome will be crucial in determining the country’s climate policies. India’s stance on renewable energy, deforestation, and climate resilience measures will significantly impact global efforts to combat climate change. The current administration has made strides in renewable energy, but the upcoming elections will decide if this momentum continues or shifts (IPCC, 2023).
Russian Presidential Election: Russia, a major player in global energy markets and one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters, held its presidential election in 2024. The election’s outcome will influence Russia’s approach to fossil fuel production and its participation in international climate agreements. The current administration has shown limited commitment to aggressive climate policies, and hence Russia’s climate trajectory seems to be unchanged and is being observed by the world (Petrov, 2023).
United Kingdom General Election: The UK, having hosted the COP26 climate summit in 2021, remains a critical player in global climate policy. The 2024 general election will determine the country’s commitment to its ambitious climate targets, including reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The election will influence policies on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation (UK Government, 2023).

As elections in India, the UK, the US, and the EU will all have significant implications for climate policy in 2024, more than 60 countries are heading to the polls this year, making it a crucial moment for global climate action and policy implementation. The pledge at COP28 to ensure we all transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a key goal to achieve by all nations involved (UNFCCC, 2023).

 Policy Priorities and Legislative Support
The outcomes of the 2024 elections will set policy priorities. Candidates with strong environmental platforms can drive more aggressive climate actions, such as:
– Investing in Renewable Energy: Supporting wind, solar, and other renewable sources to reduce carbon emissions (Jones, 2023).
– Strengthening Environmental Regulations: Implementing stricter controls on pollutants and emissions to protect air and water quality (Brown, 2022).
– Funding Sustainable Infrastructure: Promoting green infrastructure projects, including public transit and energy-efficient buildings (Green Building Council, 2023).

International Commitments and Global Cooperation
The formation of governments post-elections will influence international climate agreements. The re-election of climate-committed leaders can ensure continued support for international efforts like the Paris Agreement, while a shift to less climate-focused leadership could hinder global progress (Paris Agreement, 2015). For example, the U.S. rejoining the Paris Agreement under President Biden demonstrated the impact of electoral outcomes on international climate policy. The 2024 elections will similarly affect other countries’ commitments to global climate goals and cooperation (UNFCCC, 2023).

Corporate Accountability and Sustainable Business Practices
Election outcomes also shape corporate behaviour. Governments can drive corporate sustainability through policies that incentivize green practices and penalize environmental violations. The role of businesses in achieving climate goals is increasingly recognized, and regulatory frameworks can significantly impact corporate strategies (Deloitte, 2023). Companies are adopting more sustainable practices in response to growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products. Legislative support for sustainability can accelerate this trend, promoting innovation and green technologies across industries (GreenBiz, 2023).

The Role of Public Opinion and Grassroots Movements
Public opinion is critical in shaping political agendas. Growing awareness of climate change and its impacts has led to increased public demand for action. Grassroots movements and environmental activism are vital in holding governments accountable and pushing for stronger climate policies. Campaigns like Fridays for Future, led by youth activists, have brought climate issues to the forefront of political debates. These movements demonstrate the power of public pressure in driving policy change and encouraging leaders to prioritize environmental sustainability (Thunberg, 2023).

Challenges and Opportunities
While the 2024 elections present an opportunity to advance climate action, there are challenges. Political polarization and misinformation can hinder progress. Additionally, transitioning to a green economy could result in job losses in certain sectors, necessitating careful management to ensure a just transition (OECD, 2023). However, the elections also offer a chance to address these challenges through comprehensive policies that balance environmental sustainability with economic growth and social equity. By electing leaders committed to climate action, countries can implement strategies promoting green jobs, innovation, and sustainable development (WEF, 2023).

Steps Individuals Can Take Beyond voting
Individuals can contribute to climate action through daily choices and advocacy:
– Reduce Paper and Wood Consumption: Opt for recycled products and use both sides of paper (WWF, 2023).
– Lower Oil Consumption: Choose fuel-efficient vehicles, carpool, and use public transportation (EPA, 2023).
– Reduce Beef Consumption: Limit beef intake to reduce demand for deforestation-driven cattle ranching (FAO, 2023).
– Hold Businesses Accountable: Support companies with sustainable practices and boycott those that are environmentally irresponsible (CSR Journal, 2023).
– Invest in Rainforest Communities: Support initiatives that protect rainforest communities and promote sustainable economic activities (Rainforest Alliance, 2023).
– Support Grassroots Movements: Join or support local environmental groups and participate in activism (Sierra Club, 2023).

As we enter 2024, the stakes are high for global climate action. The outcomes of these elections will significantly influence national and international climate policies. Each vote cast this year will contribute to shaping the future of our planet’s climate. The 2024 elections are a critical juncture for global climate action and sustainability. The leaders and policies chosen will determine the effectiveness of efforts to combat climate change, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development. Voters’ choices will shape the future of environmental policy, international cooperation, and corporate practices.
As citizens, it is essential to stay informed and engaged in the political process. By voting for candidates committed to addressing climate change and supporting sustainability initiatives, we can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future for our planet.
